The name is derived from the sweet taste of the locust bean gum, which was a staple for Native Americans.The legume pulp can also be used to make beer. Although honey locust wood in not a common commercial timber source, there is a niche market for honey locust furniture. Although native to North America, the honey locust is considered a seriously invasive species in Australia.
