This variety of attractive forms, leaf shapes, and coloration have led to the production of over one thousand cultivars of this species. They are commonly planted along patios and walkways, but are also a very popular bonsai tree. The sap has a high sugar content and can be used as a drink or concentrated into syrup. It is often called “momiji” in its native range, which translates to “autumn leaves.” This is an appropriate name for this tree, as all varieties display beautiful fall color.
